Nadaprabhu Kempe Gowda was the visionary chieftain of Yelahanka under the Vijayanagara Empire, laid out Bengaluru’s first “Pete” markets in 1537. In recognition of his pivotal role in the city’s origins, the 4,700- acre Devanahalli Airport was officially renamed Kempegowda International Airport after the Karnataka Assembly approved the change on 22 December 2011. The Union Cabinet—led by then External Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna—ratified the decision on 1 July 2013, coinciding with Gowda’s 503rd birth anniversary.
The airport was at first called Bangalore Airport. In 2009, a suggestion was sent to rename the airport, and then they passed another proposal for the name change in 2011. It was then accepted in 2013, and after that, it was retitled as Kempegowda Airport in December 2013.

As of July 2025, Kempegowda International Airport has unveiled three important updates reflecting its rapid growth. First, on June 13, 2025, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) raised ₹9,000 crore (USD 1.1 billion) through local-currency bonds—working with SBI, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank—to pay down debt and fund the expansion that will boost capacity to 100 million passengers a year.
In the financial year 2024–25, the airport welcomed 41.88 million travellers (an 11.6 % increase over the previous year) and handled 502,480 tonnes of cargo (up 14 %), making it the busiest aviation hub in South India. Although on March 7, 2025, the Karnataka government shortlisted three sites along Kanakapura and Kunigal Roads for Bengaluru’s second international airport, the Airports Authority of India will complete feasibility studies by late 2025 to ease pressure on the 4,700-acre Devanahalli campus and guide future growth.
The airport was initially opened as a substitute for HAL Airport, which was the first airport serving Bangalore city. Due to the traffic in this city, this airport was started. The building first started in July 2005, and it was completed in 32 months. As there were some delays in control services, the launch date was then changed to May 2008.
